OpenAI announced its GPTBot, that will crawl the web like a search index does and filter out paywall-restricted sources, sources that violate OpenAI policies, sources that gather personally identifiable information. And the atmosphere between authors and AI have has grown tense.

Warner Brothers Discovery announced quarter ending June 2023 earnings and has lost 1.8 million subscribers across all properties including Max, the newly combined HBOMax and Discovery+ streaming service. France’s AFP news agency is suing Elon Musk’s X platform, aka Twitter, because it isn’t negotiating payment for sharing AFP stories on Twitter. Wired’s Gregory Barber has an article up about the “Local-first” software movement. Local-first has become popular in the developer community, along with the slogan “There is no cloud. There is just someone else’s computer.”
